The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. It is really beautiful and it is a UNESCO world heritage site.
It was formed about 3000BC, winds and sea currents contributed a lot of sand to raise the formation above sea level.
According to Lithuanian mythology, it was formed by a giantess Neringa. The spit was a major pagan trading centre.
Nida was a German-majority settlement, but the population was expelled by force by the Soviet army.
