Mount Athos...beautiful place... a mountain and peninsula in northeastern Greece. It’s famous because of 20 monasteries, of which the most famous is Hilandar.
Hilandar is a male monastery in the northern part of Mount Athos on the Halkidiki peninsula. The monastery has the appearance of a medieval fortress, with fortified high walls.
The meaning of the name of the monastery is derived from the Greek word helandion, which means the type of Byzantine transport ship.
The monastery has the richest collection of original old manuscripts, icons and frescoes preserved in Hilandar and in time it came on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Surrounded by high walls and it includes 12 smaller churches next to the main church. 3,500 icons are kept in the Hilandar archives, some of which are among the most valuable examples of Byzantine art. On the other hand, the oldest frescoes come from 13th century.
Today I am going to share with you some of the pictures my friend took for me that I wanted to share with you. Considering that this is a men's monastery and that a woman's foot did not step there, I had to "use" him and show you what beauty this landscape and the monastery itself has. I hope you like the pictures, because I'm thrilled. :)
