Away from the touristy places, i took it to Eastern Crete,
ancient ruins from the Minoan people, lie unvisited among the hillcountry,
i was pleased to find a ruin located at a natural harbour, protected from the sea and elements,
recent signs of habitation, a windmill and ruined housings,
some more pictures of this rugged, beautiful part of the island,
the blue sea,
and the blooming plants in spring.
The right place to get scenic.
That looks beautiful. I actually visited Kos, another Greek island, a couple of years ago. That was a nice place to visit aswell, with some beautiful beaches, but also great nature all over the island.
:)
Especially now in winter in Western Europe, the islands shine behind the hozizon.
Haven't been to Kos, but islandhopping i advice everyone and particulary with a lover.
I am deeply fascinated by the minoan culture. They were the first in Europe to invent writing afaik. They had a well developed culture and a early form of equality between the sexes. I need to go there some time :-)
example of two other sites.
You're lucky with that fascination, me to, i like the hint of Egyptian culture.
As for visiting, you can go very adventurous, hidden from view, between mountains etc, lie ruins, never visited.
Thanks for the additional info Mandibil.
There are theories about the end of the Minoan culture and also the bronze age collapse, presumably onset by the socalled sea people. The latest research points to a retreat up in the mountains to become less vulnerable and earlier warned against attacks from the sea.
Some say because of the eruption in Santorini that they moved up.
But what you say i've also heard that Mycenaean(i remember) raids, or just raids have led to the decline.
My memory may be rusty, but i believe that the tsunami from Santorini was before. They survived that shortlived flooding. The retreat was more from a permanent threat and coincides well with the bronze age collapse in 12 century bc
Ok! (bit of Wiki the tsunami was indeed 200 years earlier, did destroy their harbours, infrastructure and not the main cause, final collapse the raids, Mycenian)
Beautiful! And quiet, too.
Love these places Orcdu
and thank you!
wonderful landscape..!!
Love it!!
