I drove Cab in Fort Lauderdale for five years 1985 -1990 and boy what an experience it was. I remember my first day fresh from New Jersey not knowing where to go or what cab stands to sit on, so I stayed by the beach and where I lived and learned the area. I lived in what they called the Galt Ocean Mile, which was a bunch of high rise condo's on the beach. I had many trips to Miami Beach, which was about 30 minutes south. I use to work the beach area where the tourists were, taking them to and from dinner, nightclubs, shopping at the Galleria Mall, I drove nightshift 5pm until 3am. i must say it was the most fun I ever had in my life. One minute your in Miami then Palm Beach, Boca Raton. Then back to the airport to pick up someone who wants to go to Key West 3 hours south, that was my biggest fare $320 I also had one ride that went to Islamorada in the key's and one across alligator alley to Naples. Celebs, I had Geraldo, Jackie Mason, Brooke Shields and her Mother. I asked Rodney Dangerfield if he needed a cab out in front of Shooters night club but he said he had a ride coming. It also at times was dangerous, you had to be alert at all times especially in bad area's. I was shot at once, apparently they missed because I am writing this, I was robbed at gunpoint once also. I don't care what anyone says, when someone sticks a gun 6 inches from your face you will give them your shorts if they want them, that was very scary. We had Spring Break in Ft Laud, that was unbelievable, I can remember being the only cab to pull into the airport and thousands of spring breakers running to my taxi, of course the girls got in. There was 400 thousand spring breakers on the strip, an area of 4 blocks wide and quarter mile long.
The girls would be hanging out of the cab flashing and mooning the guys walking, there was college students everywhere having a good time. Needless to say, I saw everything you could possibly think of inside and outside of the cab. I have so many stories I'll add them in another Blog. Fort Laud also is called the Venice of America and has the infamous Water Taxi of which started in the late 80s.
