The enchanting Hanging Coffins in Sagada, Mt. Province.
Members of the Igorot tribe of Mountain Province in northern Philippines have long practised the tradition of burying their dead in hanging coffins, nailed to the sides of cliff faces high above the ground. Comfortably predating the arrival of the Spanish, the procedure can probably be traced back more than two millennia. To this day, the age-old tradition continues to be performed, albeit on a much smaller scale than before. (source: https://www.roughguides.com/article/hanging-coffins/)
According to our guide, the position of the coffins signify the how much loved ones cared for the deceased. In other words, the higher the coffins is from the ground, the more loved or valued the deceased was. Going to the Hanging Coffins, is not an easy ride, you need to trek for almost 30 minutes with high and low slopes that will make you sweat. But fret not, because the view going to the coffins is rewarding. Here are some of my snaps:
The so called Campo Santo in Sagada
The view going down to the Hanging Coffins
Surreal view of the nature. So refreshing and rewarding!
That's it for this post. Will be sharing more of my recent Banaue, Sagada & Baguio trip in the next days!
