After you're done getting drunk and high on crack, for the 'real' NYC experience, you should definitely take a stroll around Times Square. Just don't go into any of the businesses unless you have someone else's credit card... the prices around there are staggering.
If you want to do some socially conscious tourism, they might still be protesting about the mayor then. I'm sure someone will be protesting something. The trick to watching protests without getting tear gassed is to stay behind the guys with riot shields.
