Visit the Rugged Australian Alps

in #travel7 years ago

Kosciuszko National Park is one of Australia's most stunning national parks, known for its ruggedness, wilderness and history. Once used for alpine cattle grazing, these days, the area is popular for skiing and hiking with stunning mountain scenery and numerous lakes and rivers. It is also the home of Australia's largest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko which stands at 2228 m above sea level.

In Australia's high country there are many huts like this one which can offer refuge during bad weather.

With grasslands like this, you can see why the area was once common with graziers and their cattle. It's still common for other grass eaters.

It's easy to see why the snowy mountains have inspired Australian bush poets and writers for hundreds of years, the most famous of these being "The Man from Snowy River" by Banjo Paterson, a story of a heroic young man rounding up wild mountain horses (brumbies) in terrain that no other rider dared to confront. The poet, Banjo and his story is featured on the Aussie $10 note (in tiny writing, as a security feature.)

These days, brumbies still roam the grasslands in the mountains, along with abundant other wildlife such as kangaroos and sambar deer.

Living out of mum's pocket is an easy life.

The area's many rivers offer world class fishing with trophy sized brown and rainbow trout and a variety of other species such as blackfish, eels, carp and redfin perch.

And good for swimming if you don't mind icy water.

Hope you enjoyed the photos, I highly recommend visiting Kosciuszko National Park if you're an Aussie of if you're visiting Down Under as it has something for everybody.
