Using the energy of places like this sounds like a great idea. I have never actually thought it about it this way...

Oh yeah, the Canaries are very similar to the Azores in some ways, they are both of volcanic origin and not so far apart after all :) I think the biggest difference is actually the absence of mass tourism on the Azores but this might change soon, unfortunately...

Yes, it's like two side of a medallion. Tourists bring money to the inhabitants but also cause many problems, especially trash problems.
Btw...Geothermal energy has been used at least for heating purpose since ancient times. In modern times we can also use it to produce electricity. So it is a good option for countries that has a lot of volcanoes / lie on the tectonic plates, like Indonesia or Iceland for example.
