After having spent Christmas in the mountains of Ella, Sri Lanka, we caught a train towards Kandy. Little did we know that the trains were going to be packed beyond capacity. In turn we had to stand for almost the entire 7 hour journey. At every stop it felt like more people were getting on than off the train. It was a tough time getting in and out of the carriages. Often people wanting to get out were stuck because of the influx of people. I even saw people climbing out of windows and having fellow passengers hand them their bags! I was lucky enough to sit down for a few minutes at the door. As you can see it is tradition to sit half way out of the train to enjoy the view and rush of cold air.
