Cape Roca, Portugal

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Once, in a moment of mental weakness, the hero of the novel "The Golden Calf" Ostap Bender told Shura Balaganov that "the last city is Shepetovka, about which the waves of the Atlantic Ocean are broken."
Here Ostap was wrong!
Geography (in contrast, for example, from the economy) is an exact science. Therefore, it is for certain established that the most western point of the huge continent called "Eurasia" stretching "from Lisbon to Vladivostok" is Cape Roca (Cabo da Roca).

This is a point just forty kilometers from the Portuguese capital, so not visiting such a place would be an unforgivable mistake ...

How can I get to Cape Rock?
A bus no. 403 "Cascais - Sintra" (which often goes by) passes by him. The stop on the cape is so characteristic that it is impossible to miss it (if you do not sleep during the trip).

And before these settlements from Lisbon it is easy to reach by train. The only thing (as Lelik said from the Diamond Arm): "Look, ne nepreputai!" - in Sintra you need to leave the station of Rosiu, and in Cascais - from the station of Kaish do Sodra.
We drove through Cascais (to get to the bus stop in this small resort town, you need to go from the station across the road and go down to the basement of the shopping center).
And then, after a walk on the cape, you can either go back to Cascais, or go on to Sintra ...

On the Internet and guidebooks, the opinion is that it is very romantic to be on Cape Rock at sunset. Then, they say, you will be the "last person in Europe," who will see the sun on this day.
But, as usual, romance breaks down about the harsh prose of life ...
Another fact, established for sure by the exact science of geography - the sun sets in the west. In our case, where the Atlantic Ocean is located.
So, until it goes down very low, a photo of the sea spaces may not turn out.
There is a more serious problem - in the beginning of September (when we were in Portugal) the sun sets after 8 pm. And the last bus leaves the cape at 7 with something.
That is, after a romantic sunset will have to experience a completely romantic adventure, trying to return to Lisbon.
Therefore, it is better to go before lunch. So we did ...

Cape Rock is a rocky rock on which ... yes, frankly speaking, not very much.
First, it is a small obelisk crowned with a cross. With a commemorative plaque.

In addition to geographical coordinates, it contains words that confirm the well-known opinion that the sister of talent is short.
"Here the earth ends and the sea begins" ...

Secondly - several small buildings, among which a lighthouse stands out.

In one of the houses (right next to the bus stop) is the tourist office. Here is sold a thing that I wanted to buy - a certificate of visiting Cape Rock. In which you can write your name, and then proudly hang on the wall (or hide in the closet).
Unfortunately, this plan failed - the certificate was larger than I expected. And for its safety, the tube, in which advanced students carry drawings, would be best suited.
And since Sintra still had plans for that day, I realized that by the evening the bought "document" would surely turn into a crumpled piece of paper ...

The lighthouse stands on top of a hill.

And it looks very photogenic.

A photograph on its background is a mandatory item of the program.

Vegetation on the cape is modest to the point of disrepute. It seems that you are not in Southern Europe, but somewhere in the tundra, on the coast of the Arctic Ocean.

There are no trees, no bushes. Even the grass is a bit - most of the cape is covered with some kind of cactus-like fleshy plants (only without thorns).

Perhaps this is because of the rocky soil. And a crazy wind (which, perhaps, is a separate attraction of Cape Rock).
It seems a little more - and you, like Brother Montgolfier, sweep up and fly straight to Lisbon.

Instead of sound on the video, one continuous crackling and roaring is heard.

But the most basic thing on Cape Rock, of course, is not some kind of building there. They are even a bit superfluous here.

As a matter of fact, Cape Rock is a large observation deck!

The westernmost point of our continent is on a high cliff with a steep bank. Therefore, along the cliff, railings from the poles are installed.

On the south side is a small cove.

With rocky shores.

Water glitters in the sun.

On the north side is the aforementioned lighthouse on a stony rock, on which waves of the Atlantic Ocean are broken.

Here is a more or less calm surf.

Now turn your gaze to the west.

Coast, surf, rocks ...

And then - the beginning
