No other place in the world can compare to South Africa. It is a one-of-a-kind world where an enormous variety of animals run free in their natural atmosphere. If you are visiting South Africa, be sure to go on a safari. You will feel truly alive for the first time in your life. Keep in mind that you cannot plan everything when going on a safari, but here are some basic tips that you should know before making any reservations.
1. Take a solar hat
Do NOT take a baseball cap. A solar hat will cover you from the sun in every way you need. It will help keep you cool and prevent a major sunburn on your neck. Many people do not realize that the seasons in Africa are not in the same order than the rest of the world. In June, July and August it is summer in certain parts of the world, but it is the winter in Africa. Depending on when you travel, just keep in mind that weather stations are completely different. The sun hits stronger in some parts of South Africa throughout the day than others. Check the climate conditions before booking to avoid packing the wrong clothes or having to spend more money. Pack light. South Africa’s climate is usually hot through the year. Just keep in mind that in winter, the temperature starts to lower quickly after 4:00 PM.
2. Flu Shot
Before traveling to any part of the world, get a flu shot, in addition to any other vaccination that would be helpful for the particular place you are going (this can often cost up to $1000). New environments can have huge, adverse effects on the body, and by getting vaccinated, you can seriously save your life (and potentially others’). Also remember to look into antibacterials, anti-malarial pills and anything else you might need.
3. Prevent Mosquito Bites
All of us know that we can get malaria or more if we get bitten by a mosquito bite in Africa. Furthermore, mosquito bites are just uncomfortable. To prevent mosquito bites at all, use the best repellent you can find. Cover your body through the night if you are staying in tents. Always invest in screens, nets, etc. Also, try to remain in the shelter at night, because bites are more common at night.
4. Listen
Whoever is your instructor, make sure you listen carefully to everything he or she indicates. Remember, on a safari you are a guest in a different world. Don’t be afraid to ask questions though. An instructor will teach you how to be aware of the wildlife you are going to encounter and how to tread lightly. Listen up!
5. Footwear
When you are in the bushes or traveling by foot, wear boots. No matter what the temperature is, pack some proper footwear. There are plenty of animals such as snakes, tarantulas, scorpions that could bite you. Look at the ground often to see where you are stepping, and never go barefoot!
6. Respect Animals
Avoid throwing animals food or unsafe objects. Try not to have too many dangly objects around you. Also, stay downwind from any animal you encounter. Also, take note of which way the wind is blowing, and avoid being on the side where your smell will be pushed towards an animal. You never know how an animal will react to your new aroma.
So cool. I can't imagine seeing these majestic animals in the wild up close.
Any nearby zoo can be alternate to experience the wildlife virtually.
