Food, agriculture and satellites... this time in Poland - part1

in #travel7 years ago

Hello! I'm back!

I've been conducting some demanding fieldwork in the last weeks.
In order to build good quality crop maps based on satellite images we have to collect lots of information in the ground. With a fair amount of good quality data the process can be automated and achieve good results. After Portugal, Spain and France I was now in Poland and Romania.

The program was like: fly to the nearest city, rent a car, drive to certain precise locations to check what type of culture is being grown there (in that particular plot), grab something to eat (never formal lunch), end late, go to the hotel, have dinner and sleep.

When the regions were close to one another, we drove to the next one and repeated the process. When the regions were a bit far we had to fly and start all over again... (rent a car... bla bla bla)

It was pretty exhausting but obviously it was nice to know new places. It's not like we are on vacation and get to choose where to go and what to visit. We just had to visit certain places and that was it. Nevertheless, this discovery feeling is very exciting and we were very lucky to be at very beautiful regions.

The first few days were spent in the Nowy Targ County. The previous and the following photos were all taken somewhere in this beautiful county. Enjoy!

Great pictures, @rmach. I love that you are able to travel all over. Even though you can't choose where to go, at least you get to go there!

For whom are you developing crop maps? I'm guessing it's for a governmental entity...? And where are you based out of?

Thanks again for the window into your world. I have upvoted your post and followed you so I can see future pictures. Feel free to follow me back.

In the meantime, good luck on Steem and enjoy your journey!

Thanks! It's a research project with many universities in several countries but ultimately funded by the European Union. http://www.salsa.uevora.pt/en/
