Morocco is unlike any country you'll ever visit.
Being my first ever time in Africa, I really had no idea what to expect. I heard many things about Morocco, some good, but also some bad. Despite this, I wanted to have an open mind when arriving in Morocco and gosh am I glad I gave this country a chance.
What better place to start than the old imperial capital of Morocco - Marrakesh. The moment you enter the medina, your senses are instantly assaulted all at once by hundreds of aromas, sounds, sights and people. Its truly an experience, one to show in my next post of the market. But first I want to start off calm and peaceful, with Koutoubia Mosque which is located west of the town square. As you can see from my last photograph, the mosque towers proudly over everything else for miles, being an iconic centre of the city next to Jemaa el-Fna, which is locataed 200m west.
The mosque's minaret is flanked by lush gardens and greenery, and the grounds is free to visit (but you must be a Muslim to enter the mosque itself, like with most mosques in the country). Constructed and completed in the late 12th century, Koutoubia Mosque is a sight to behold if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle from the main medina. Speaking of which, stay tuned to my next post for the busyness that is Jemaa el-Fna Square!

It looks amazing. I wonder, is it too hot in Morocco ? Do you sweat too much ?
Yeah very hot, at the moment at 40C+ which is almost unbearable during the middle of the day. A lot of sweat!
That is what scares me about travelling. I hate sweat and hot climate.
Embrace it! Just stay hydrated and you'll be fine :) I prefer it to the cold and cloudy but its a personal preference!
Great post! I love the part "and all this starts again at the crack of dawn.." :)

Thanks bro!
Lovely fotos. None of the market square? I guess you thought that is overdone. :-)
I will have some soon :D
I have been to Marrakesh and honestly its a great and exotic city. I loved the old souk (bazaar) which is very traditional market showing the heritage of the city and the country. I took a few trips from the city to the Atlas mountains, hiking through the valleys to witness the rural life of people.
great blog. best of luck in your journey
