Krishna’s Butter Ball-The Ball That Doesn't Roll!
Mahabalipuram,a small coastal town is a popular tourist destination for it’s stone carvings and also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, 58 km south of the city of Chennai.Another attraction for which the town is famous for is Krishna’s Butterball or the Gravity defying stone.The original name of the stone in Tamil is, Vaan Irai Kal, which translates from to as "Stone of Sky God".
According to Hindu mythology Lord Krishna had an insatiable appetite for butter, and as a child, would often sneak a handful from his mother’s butter jar. Situated on a hill slope near the Ganesh Ratha this massive natural rock boulder is attributed amounts of butter the young Krishna would steal.
Krishna’s Butter ball is a giant granite boulder weighing 250 tons and being approximately 6m high and 5m wide.The boulder rests on a 4ft base on a slope and has been at the same place for 1200 years.Numerous attempts have been made to remove the stone citing security and safety concerns but all in vain. In 1908 7 elephants were used to move the stone but the attempt failed.
The balance of the stone has left many scientists and researchers awestruck and speechless.The stone is bigger and heavier than the monolithic stones of Machu Pichu!!
