Looking at Leipzig

in #travel8 days ago (edited)

We took the train from Dresden to Leipzig with some nice views. There were some vineyards with big houses. Leipzig station is apparently the largest in Europe.

Steam

There were some classic carriages and this train there.

Entrance hall

There was a nice market by the old town hall (Rathaus).

Old Rathaus

The new Rathaus is huge with a big tower.

New Rathaus

It has some strange carvings. These places often seem to have a bar downstairs.

Who is eating whom?

Bach is one of my musical heroes and he was the musical director at the churches here for some time.

JS Bach

There is a nice museum about him. He had 20 children and lived nearby. Many of the children did not live long, but several became composers too.

Bach's organ

His remains were moved to the Thomaskirche after the previous location was destroyed and there is a window for him.

Bach window

They have some interesting sculptures around the city.

Sculpture

We took a boat tour to see another side. There was one bridge where we all had to duck down.

Boat cruise

There is plenty of street art here, some of it well done. The artists need to get out in boats along the river to reach these locations. There are some nice houses along there and the old industrial buildings have largely been converted for apartments. I expect they are not cheap.

Sort:

you are doing quite the road trip, I loved Leipzig too, did you get to the Ostermarkt, or were you a bit early for that?

There's a sort of spring market. Lots of Easter stuff about generally. The place has a different feel to Dresden.

Yes not as austere

It looks a beautiful place to visit! I like so much the strange carvings on the corners of the building! I watched something similar in Florence, but not a one where someone seems to eat someone. :D

That building is only about 120 years old, but maybe it was based on something older. There seemed to be a lot of faces carved into buildings.

Those riverside apartments will definitely not be cheap!

Leipzig looks really cool, enjoy!

I expect a lot has changed since the wall came down. No doubt some developers did well from it. You would hardly know that it was a communist country a generation ago. I have to say that it's very clean and I've hardly seen any of the begging that is common in some other parts of Europe.

It looks lovely, I shall be mentioning it to the missus!!

WOw, love the photo album thanks for sharing.

@akipponn are you here? 🙂
