Wat Chiang Rai was designed by the students of international renown Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, who is the owner and architect of Wat Rong Khun. Wat Rong Khun is located in Chalermchai Kositpipat's hometown of Chiang Rai but Wat Chiang Rai is located in Lampang, Thailand. The Abbott of Wat Chiang Rai like most Thais admired and was inspired by Chalermchai Kositpipat work.
He asked Chalermchai Kositpipat for help with the reconstruction and design of Wat Chiang Rai and the painter sent his top students and disciples to complete the task.
I was excited because I am a super fan of Chalermchai Kositpipat's work and have three autographed replicas. I've been to Wat Rong Khun five times over the past 10 years and when I saw Wat Chiang Rai, I was impressed. The feeling I had was like watching a fighter fight having been a fan of his coach or sensei. The abstract designs were very similar and the architectural placement was eye-catching.
I sat in the main hall for a minute to escape the heat to recite some Pali scripts to praise the temple's main statue of Buddha. The design is what you would expect from the highest level of artists. Jaw dropping artistic paintings and structural placement of all the statues of Buddha.
I walked around the grounds to admire the artistry again before leaving and vowed to be back to do another good deed, sooner than later.
