Iločki Podrumi (ILOK CELLARS) located on the bank of the Danube river, is in the most easterly located town of Croatia, in Ilok, known for its antiques and wines. From what I can gather the winery was established around 1697, but the area had been producing wines for more then a thousand years, dating back to Roman times.
When we arrived it was hot and humid and the estate grounds looked very inviting with its outdoor table and chairs under large shady trees and once inside one could immediately feel the cool of centuries old stonework shielding us from the heat of the day.
Our tour took us through long lines of wooden vats that were much older than myself, as well as small alcoves filled with racks of dusty wine bottles that were decades if not hundreds of years old. If ever opened, I wonder if they still were tasty or had turned to vinegar?
After the tour, we sat a large table to taste the wineries produce. Supplied with some cheese and biscuits, we proceeded to taste as many different wines as we could. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience in a setting that was a mixture of medieval and modern.
When we had drunk our fill and munched on the snacks, it was time to hit the road and start making our way into Serbia.
