Old buildings and signs of conflict

in #travel2 years ago
Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia and is known for the largest incidence of Baroque buildings in Croatia. The old town is where this style is lrevalent, but there are plenty of beautiful and ornate houses etc in the new part of town, as seen on some of the photos below.
Osijek was bombarded by the Hungarian Peoples Army in 1991-1992, and there are still plenty of signs of the conflict to observe. Bullet holes in buildings were quite a regular sight and I think they remain unrepaired as a reminder of how war can impact everyones life. Our guide pointed out one building that had been hit by mortor fire in the conflict, resulting in half of its roof and interior being destroyed. It has remained in this state to this day as they cannot locate or discover whatever fate had fallen on the owner and the local law says that the building cannot be touched until the owners fate can be ascertained.
It is certainly a beautiful city. We even saw a storks nest which had been constructed on a buildings belfry tower.
