Britain's freeze stops Britain working

in #travel7 years ago

Here's today's AA Road map of roads blocked throughout the UK.

For those of you who have not heard or seen the latest news, Britain along with a lot of Europe is having - for the 21st century - unusually cold weather for February. I say 21st century because most of you will know of the global chit chat about how it's changed so much since the 1960's around the world.

Now I don't profess to be in the know about the weather patterns. I do know that the polar vortex (a circle of cold wind/storms) around the north pole have become up to 20 degrees warmer of late which has pushed the cold down a tad and Britain just happens to be at the right level to cop it.

There's a great piece on the vortex issue here which is worth a read, even if you're not too science-minded. It is our planet after all.

However today I just thought I'd show you what this does to this small island sat just off Europe's mainland.
Unlike Russia, Germany, Northern France, Canada and the like, we never really prepare. "It'll never happen to us" syndrome rules.... until it does. Then our little patch of the world falls to pieces.
I don't mind. I'm at home mostly but I do feel for the emergency service people, the doctors and nurses, the bus drivers and so on who MUST go out into it and face the fury.

So here's a few pictures from around the UK today.

via BBC news - Traffic on the M80 between Glasgow and Stirling was brought to a standstill for several hours as emergency services worked to clear a series of accidents

A satellite image showed snow covering most of the UK

Motorists have been told to only take to the roads if it is absolutely necessary

And a few from friends

So for those of you cosy and warm, or those used to this and have strategies in place give a thought to the freezing Brits who find this amusing, amazing, annoying, fun, beautiful and in some cases dangerous.

I can wait for Spring time.....

I think you'll find in places its 33cm plus Not 3. And I don't care who comments but I'd like to see any country who doesn't usually get snow to deal with this without a problem. Even walking in it is near impossible in places.

Storm Emma: UK snow could reach 50cm as conditions worsen... again a tad more than THREE.

Shall I go on?........

yea go on ...its a free world post whatever you like ...i mentioned South West UK and there is no 33cm of snow on british roads and in towns ...if it is then yes in some places maybe and then city has a right to react on it and close the schools and shops or whatever they like if necesarry ...i can remind you that there is more than 33cm of snow in some countries and they dnt close schools ,shops, firms dnt close their business .they deal with it and they live as normall, they dnt react like its the end of the world and this is what i wanted to show in my post.. Its simply a poor preparation for such a weather conditions ,especially when they knew its coming

I think I made that point in the post re "it'll never happen to us" part. And you're lucky no snow because i have friends in Cumbria/Yorkshire/Scotland with power cut off and the concern is flooding as snow of these depths melts. My friend in Newfoundland finds it amusing (snow october to may) but he doesnt call us weak. .. just a tad ill prepared. Thank you for your input. Appreciated. Better than no commemt at all. 🙃
