One would think that the medieval city of Bruges would be world news because of its historical buildings and the fact that it is listed on UNESCO ‘s World Heritage List and receives every year millions of visitors from all over the world.

This time, however, the city made the international press because it has as the only city in the world an underground pipeline with beer. Belgium has always been the Walhalla of the beer lovers but a pipeline under the city where the nectar of the Gods is flowing is something special. Neighboring Germany, also a country that holds a high esteem of beer will be copying the achievement soon.

The reasons for the pipeline (or is it beer line) are very simple: to avoid the traffic in the city from the brewery to the bottle factory and further to the customers. The Brewery ‘The Half Moon’ is getting a worldwide publicity with this stunt.

The CEO of the brewery explains that it happened for ecological reasons. Furthermore, this way there is no disruption of the antique city view of Bruges. Because of the pipeline, about 500 trucks will not have to pass yearly through the center of the city. The brewery exists 500 years and gets about 100.000 visitors yearly who come to taste the beers.

When asked how much this adventure cost, the brewery prefers not to answer, but they do tell that it was costly. About 6.000 liters/1585 gallons float under the streets of this marvelous city in one-hour time. The pipeline is a 3km/1 mile long.
