I have been meaning to write a tribute to Kalymnos for a few weeks now; since I visited this Greek island during summer and was really impressed. Well now this time has come.
Kalymnos is a Greek island that doesn’t possess ‘material’, or may I say ‘earthy’, ‘riches’. Its inhabitants were forced to leave their native land and immigrate to richer countries (mostly the USA and Australia). The ones left behind couldn’t work on the barren land, so they called upon the other wealth: the sea. And they became experts!
The first and most important contribution of the Kalymnians to the Mediterranean world, was in the field of diving to collect sponges. Kalymnians invented diving methods that were unknown at their times, while this enhanced their fishing methods and thus the commerce. Although sponge diving at some moment was reduced due to a sponges’ disease (in the latest decades of the 20th century), nevertheless their capabilities in the fishery sector are admirable and well-respected amongst other islands with a long naval tradition. Kalymnians are very well ahead from the rest “Mediterranean fishing tribes” in terms of understanding the sea and its secrets. They are considered to have the biggest and most advanced fishing boats amongst all the other Greek islands while the fishermen are the most skilful.
I visited this island only for a few hours and I must say that it has a very nice port position with nice architecture and calm life. Outside the city-port stands an impressive castle, amongst other antiquities that are part of Kalymnos:
I read that this island is well known for its climbing opportunities. I am not an athlete myself, but the rock climbing is said to be very advanced here, as, apart from the landscapes, there seems to exist a variety of caves to explore. Kalymnos Rock Climbing Festival, international climbing magazine tributes and organised tours seem to be taking place with regards to this sport.
Kalymnos citizens are very polite. Also here you will find the remainders of a very rich history, as Kalymnos has been inhabited from antiquity and until recently conquered by various nations - the last being the Italians. Moreover, its landscape is amazing with a great diversity of beaches.
Definitely planning on returning and enjoying these beauties for a longer time! Greetings!
