A peaceful home for the chimps.
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in October 1998 to care for orphaned chimpanzees that have been rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Many of the chimpanzees were rescued from poachers and are unlikely to survive reintroduction to the wild.
Ngamba Island is 100 acres (approximately 40 hectares) of rain forest situated a short boat ride (23 km) away from Entebbe, near the Equator in Lake Victoria, Uganda. It supports a rich diversity of natural wildlife and provides a variety of natural foods for the chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees have always been abused by humans, whether through the destruction of forests or the illegal sale of chimps themselves. But the rainforests of this semi-equatorial island have become a place to enjoy this lovely primitive. The island, controlled by a wildlife conservation group, helps these chimpanzees always have access to adequate food and water, and during the day they can freely fly on the island and make it their territory. To know
Chimpanzees can last up to 60 years and usually have different social statuses in their communities. Male chimpanzees are more susceptible to the group, which may sometimes take up to two years to complete. In any case, the island of Ngamba is a good example of the collection and care of chimpanzees, which have been painful and, of course, different lives and brought to the island from various places.
Chimpanzees inhabiting the island of Ngamba have had a very painful life in the past: some orphans and many others have been exploited as pet or for work in circuses. But they have been able to form a community on this island and have grown over the last 20 years. The island has become a home to monkeys that humans have hated. There are 49 chimpanzees on the island, part of the 200,000 remaining chimpanzees in Africa. The population of chimps has been five times that of a century ago, so the name of this animal has been recorded in the list of endangered species and there have been significant measures to protect them.
