'Who Wore The First Necktie?'
During the Europen Thirty Year War in the 17th century, Croatian light cavalry was fighting on the side of Habsburg Monarchy. The war was long and tiring for the Habsburgs. The Croatian calvary at those times had long-lasting war experience from the constant clashes with Ottomans (Turks) and represented a very important force to be reckoned with.
When they marched in Paris, the locals noticed the scarfs that hang down their neck. These were a part of the uniform and were used to warm up the chest during the ride. Soon, fashion-awaken Parisiens copied the scarf and called the scarf "a la Croate"' what would translate as "like the Croats". And this is how cravat came into existence. The very necktie worn today by men all over the world is the derivative.
So if you ever wondered who and how invented the necktie, you have just been told. :-) This is not a legend, it is a viable fact. Next time you visit Zagreb, do not hesitate to buy a very original one.
These guys are no actors. They are a part of the military. The honorary cravat-pukovnija was established to promote tradition and the origins of the necktie as I've explained. The change of guard duty and patrolling the city are what they do. Of course, they are a tourist attraction, above all.
The next time when you tie your cravat, you'll remember its origins. Who wore the first necktie in the history? Well... the Croats did! ;-)

The Sididian is a gem seen in the rocks of the ancient year, Xian in the Chinese region. Another popular neckline was present in William Shakespeare's era (1564-1616), "ruff".

We have old forts all over Canada that sill function as though they would have back then with real military working there. I love watching the changing of the guard. At Fort Henry in Kingston, ON you can see the full parade of arms each day as well as a military 10 gun salute and cannon firing. It is amazing how formal the dress was way back in the early days. I can't help but think how miserable it would have been to wear those clothes on a hot summer day.

Most sartorialists agree that the necktie originated in the 17th century, during the 30 year war in France. King Louis XIII hired Croatian mercenaries (see picture above) who wore a piece of cloth around their neck as part of their uniform. While these early neckties did serve a function (tying the top of their jackets that is), they also had quite a decorative effect – a look that King Louis was quite fond of. In fact, he liked it so much that he made these ties a mandatory accessory for Royal gatherings, and – to honor the Croatian soldiers – he gave this clothing piece the name “La Cravate” – the name for necktie in French to this day.
