Travel around the island of Crete. Frangokastello and Chania

in #travel7 years ago

This is the fourth and final part of my story about a trip to the island of Crete. This time we will talk about Frangokastello and the city of Chania.

You can find other posts about this trip in my blog!

Departing to Frangokastello, we expected to see a large fort, more like a medieval castle, but how wrong we were ... Looking ahead, the fortress is not noticeable. Yes, it is preserved, yes, it is ancient. But it is absolutely not interesting. So much so that the sea in the photo is more interesting than the fortress.

The name "Frangokastello" literally translates as "Frank's Castle". The fort was built in the 14th century to protect against pirates and to establish general order in the region.

Also, the place is noteworthy that once a year, in the early May morning, there is a mirage and it may seem that a group of people dressed in black moves from the neighboring church towards the castle. As it seems to me, this is just an invention for attracting tourists. The funny thing is that for this phenomenon even came up with a special term "drorosulite", derived from the Greek word dew.

There are not many cafes. The menu is very modest, and the food itself is not very tasty. But! At the entrance to Frangokastello, as soon as you leave the streamer, you need to turn left following the sign for the tavern. That's where the food is amazing! It's me on the balcony of that very tavern:

But the most interesting thing in the trip to Frangokastello is the road, or rather the serpentines. To say that I was scared was to say nothing. Although, I have already seasoned with trips to Krasnaya Polyana in the 90's =)

This is the beginning of the descent:

Near middle:

Yes, the photo does not look as epic as it really is.

Throughout the road we came across these creatures:

Well, in conclusion of my story about the trip to Crete, I will tell about the city of Chania. We actually were not going to go there, but someone told us that in this city the most beautiful sunsets on the whole island! And, naturally, we could not miss the chance to see it.

Chania is a small but densely populated city, and, like in any other city of the island, it is full of taverns and souvenir shops.

Slightly wandered around the city and bought souvenirs, we drank a cocktail in one of the cafes on the central square:

But, in fact, and for what we were driving here:

That's my whole story about the wonderful island of Crete. Of course, for that week, I did not have time to see all the cities and sights, but we managed to go round the whole western half! Also, I did not have time to get enough of local flavor, traditions and, of course, food. Well, then there is an excuse to come here again!

У тебя очень длинные истории, @yushkov.
Но похоже, что тут их тоже никто не читает.
