The island of Crete in Greece offers a wide variety of landscapes but in this post you can only enjoy the wild beauty of the mountains!
So if you find this appealing go on reading :)
A few days ago I joined a hiking expedition for a 12 km route from the hamlet of Ziros all the way to Epano Zakros.
We began in the morning taking an old uphill footpath which runs along a dry water course.
The sunshine combined with a light breeze offered the perfect weather for hiking while the scent of thyme and sage was filling the air!
The path was very well preserved and marked with color signs.
So nobody could understand…
…how we got lost!
We tried to get directions from a passing by sheep but it was in a terrible hurry :)
The landscape around us was quite rough and the thought of turning back started to crawl among us!
After a short brainstorming we decided to trust our guide (although he got lost in the first place) and continue without the comfort of a path.
About an hour later we got back on track and shortly after that, we ran across some signs of civilization.
The sight of Saint George’s little church meant the end of our little disorientation and the beginning of a short break after 3,5 hours of walking.
After the break we started the descent to a small plateau that used to be farmed land for barley and wheat.
On our way we ran across a lot of gates that are there to confine the sheep and our guide always made sure that we left them closed.
At the last part of the hike we enjoyed the view of the sea while passing next to emblematic rock formations.
From Zakros we went back to Ziros and to our cars, the Greek way!
All the pictures were taken by me with my Canon EOS 7D and a Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens attached.

Of all the things I carried in my camera bag was a compass and a map of the local area. Great pics of the hike.
