Punta Sur - Isla Mujeres - Mexico

We decided to extended our stay on Isla Mujeres for another week. So I thought it was about time we took a stroll down to the southern tip of the island.

The walk from our mid island colonia in La Gloria, took us about 45 minutes. Walking the path alongside the ocean is the coolest option, thanks to the delicious breeze coming off the water.

Punta Sur is the southernmost point on Isla Mujeres. It's where the sun first hits Mexico and it's also the highest point in the Yucatan. The rocky cliffs are quite impressive.

The colour of the surrounding water is beautiful. Considering the weather is soooo hot, it looks very enticing. We also saw a huge pod of dolphins swim by. You can see Cancun from across the water too.

At the end of the island, we found some interesting sculptures. It’s an outdoor art exhibition that was built to pay tribute to the Mayans, and to represent different aspects of island life.

And right at the very tip of Isla Mujeres stands an ancient Mayan temple. The temple was built for Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon. It's believed that the temple was used as a lighthouse too, similar to the one we saw in Tulum. It's been a bit battered by the weather, but parts of it are still standing.

People have been tying their entry wristbands to the plants around the temple. I’m not too sure why though.

The sky was pretty epic the whole time we were exploring Punta Sur. We left just before sunset so we didn’t have to walk home in the dark. On our way home, the sky lit up with pinks and purples, like it usually does. I've never seen so many colourful sunsets in all my life.

Isla Mujeres has been a lovely little island to spend some time on. It's been good to live amongst the locals in their brightly coloured homes and loud streets. Most people have been really friendly and excited to listen to our terrible Spanish.

Unfortunately our side of the island is now affected by the Sargassum seaweed. It seems to be invading beaches all over the Caribbean. That has kept us out of the water most days. But the Western side of the island is still clear, along with North Beach, so there's plenty of other options. And last night we even got to see a huge sea turtle nest on our local beach. It was absolutely incredible.

We've been a bit like hermit crabs these last couple of weeks. It has given us the chance to catch up on some work, although the internet has been slooow. When the electricity goes out, we usually head outside for some beach time or tacos. We’ve spent so much time indoors lately that I’ve lost my Mexican tan. Dam!

Looks like we’ll be in Mexico for another week or so, and then some big changes are on the horizon. I'll keep you posted.

Lots of Love

I would stay in Mexico forever having such awesome scenery thre. It seems we'll be surprised in a week or so, @jessicaoutside.

It is very beautiful. Unfortunately the internet is very unreliable so it has made work a little hard. But yes big changes on the mind 😁

So good for you that you stayed one more week! You got a chance to take some beautiful photos! I love the color of water, so blue greenish!

Thank you for sharing!

Yeah I'm glad we stayed a little longer. Felt like we hadn't explored much due to some other commitments. Oh the water was insane down there. Absolutely stunning 😍 thanks for reading!

Wow Jessica what a beautiful place in Mexico. That water... and those gorgeous plants. So great. I just saw @delishtreats wednesdaywalk. Yours was very similar. I got explore Isla Mujeres. Thank you!

Thanks so much @sjarvie5 Isla is extremely beautiful. Glad we finally made it to the other end. Thanks for reading 🙏

Absolutely gorgeous! I can now see why my friend enjoys living there.

Oh that's cool. We've met a few people that have decided to make this place their new home. It's such a beautiful part of the world. And the locals are so lovely.

Ah Mexico. Still as beautiful as I remember.

She's such a babe!

Majestic...

Stunning place 👌

The sculptures look pretty cool. Not sure what they all mean though. I really like the third one, the one that looks like (the root of a) tree or something. Do you happen to know what it stands for?

Yeah they were pretty random. They did have individual plagues in front of each sculpture but I didn't read most of them. That one actually looked like a big sailing ship to me 😄
