The beauty of ancient villages

A collage of village structures

title art.png

This image I created as a collage of village structures and textures is going to be used to do an acrylic painting from. It is a kind of collection of elements, not a specific place. I love how these old communities were built to accommodate foot traffic, and were added to over time to become these organic, living structures. I resourced this piece from my photos from Japan, Greece, and Italy.

Ancient villages grew in organic ways due to several factors. Firstly, people settled in areas that were conducive to their lifestyles, such as near water sources, fertile land for agriculture, or strategic locations for trade and defense. These settlements began as small clusters of houses, often built with locally available materials such as wood, stone, and mud.

The growth of ancient villages was not centrally planned, but rather emerged from the needs and activities of the people who lived there. This organic growth resulted in villages that were often irregularly shaped, with houses and streets that followed the contours of the land. Despite this irregularity, ancient villages were often well-adapted to their environments, and their organic growth allowed them to evolve in response to changing circumstances.
