Nestled between three mountain peaks

Taking the bus up to Kegon Falls and Chuzen-ji Temple

On the Spacia X Tobu Limited Express train from Tokyo, we could see the three mountain peaks in the distance – Mt. Nantai, Mt. Nyoho, and Mt. Taro - surrounding our destination of Nikko, Japan. Once checked into the old historic Nikko Kanaya Hotel, with its low ceilings and smell of a wood fireplace, we visited Shinkyo Bridge nearby, a World Heritage Site. This spiritual area is known for its tofu skin, called yuba.

My sketch with watercolor added

Next day we took a bus up the twisting road to see Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, where I made this watercolor sketch. It is a beautiful walk along the lake to the temple. You can also walk farther to visit the English and Italian embassies. It was too early in the season for boat rides on the lake, but we did stop for coffee at the Italian Embassy for a cappucino, enjoying the views from the paned sitting room overlooking the lake. Kegon Falls is nearby as well, and worth a stop. We took the elevator down for the best views.
