Escaping the carnival music in Boquete, Panama
A small, quiet community
This was a trip of volunteer work at a local nonprofit. As it turned out, they were poorly organized and did not have much going on for real programs. I took off with two friends there. We got a ride to David and caught a bus to the Costa Rica border. From there we hired a driver to take us to the nearest beach. Arriving after dark from a confusingly bumpy ride through uninhabited country, we arrived at a tiny community and managed to rent one room in a hostel there. Each night when I got up to use the bathroom there was a giant frog in the hallway. I never saw it during the day. A tiny store sold rum and coca cola – the traveler’s medication for all ails. It worked as planned.
The feeling of being lost in a decrepit forgotten place put me in the mood to do a few sketches. Beaches were beautiful, and every afternoon fishermen came in with their loads for the evening dinner. We found just one restaurant that also seemed forgotten, or maybe just forgettable. It was fine with us. I met a family who had a house rented for the month and were doing absolutely nothing from day to day. Cheap and relaxing.
Two of these sketches are in pencil, and the third one is using pen and ink.
