Exploring the Douro area of Portugal

Scenic neighborhoods

The Douro region of Portugal produces their famous port wine. The hills rising steeply from the Douro River are speckled with small towns and picturesque neighborhoods. We always opt to take the smaller roads, and Portugal is a gold mine of tiny villages connected with the narrowest of roads, many just one lane.

Many of these old villages are nearly a thousand years old, still functioning due to the massive stones used in their construction. Even when doors, windows and roofs have fallen in due to neglect, the main structures remain solid and can be restored to very livable places. Some are in ruins because the owner who inherited it lives elsewhere and doesn’t care about it. But they are kept in the family and not sold, so one day it no doubt will fall into the hands of a family member who takes an interest in it.

I stopped in several small towns to do sketches. This one was drawn in pencil, with watercolor added later in my room.
