At Lake Chuzen
An amazing temple along the lakeside
We stayed in the town of Nikko and took a bus ride into the mountains to see the dramatic Kegon Falls and to walk along the lake. It was too early in the season to take a boat ride on the lake, so we opted to walk out to the Chuzen-ji Temple and on to the old historic English and Italian Embassies. We had coffee at the Italian Embassy, sitting in a pane window room looking out over the lake. It felt more like a lodge than an embassy. The lake level was so low that workers were busy extending their boat ramps to accommodate the spring tourism.
This view of the temple entrance is from the main road, which takes a turn at the temple and skirts the lake to the embassies.
My sketch was drawn using brown ink and painted with watercolor washes.
