In the old Geisha District
Samurai residences, narrow cobblestone streets, tiny restaurants, a mix of traditional and modern
It was great to see this neighborhood of Kagurazaka in Shinjuku again. The main avenue is full of small shops, but I like to duck into the narrow walkway leading to the older part, just wide enough for foot travel. I’m drawn to the tiny restaurants where just a few stools at the counter promise a view of the chef at work – tight and intimate.
This sketch is of a corner house, with all its bamboo shades and shadows. I drew it with pen and ink, and then added watercolor washes to it.
