I have many fond memeries of visits to the zoo as a child and also with taking my son to visit. It would be great to be able to see them in their natural environment but there would not be the diversity. It does sadden me to see them caged up but I do like how the zoos are trying to make the habitates more natural and as you said keeping the ones born in captivity not bring wild animals in.
I hope your son enjoyed his day at the zoo - it sure is a beautiful area!
