Tripreport 3 - Floating / Railway Market Maeklong, Thailand

My Post (1).jpg

Good day dear followers & steemians !

I remember a few years back that I saw a documentary about the craziest and most exciting markets on our planet. One of them was in Thailand, the Railway market in Maeklong.
As I'm a big fan of visiting all different kinds of markets I decided last weekend to do a trip to the famous market in Maeklong, which is a city in the province of Samut Songkhram (Around 65km away from Bangkok Central).

How to go there?

You can go there by bus , which cost you around 2.50$ - Just go by BTS to the last green station Mo Chit , take a Minivan from there to the big Bus Station Terminal 2 (Chatuchak) and get a ticket for 90 BATH to Maeklong (90min drive).

I started my day quite early as I dont live directly in Bangkok (60min south - Chonburi) and woke up around 06:30 AM to catch my bus at 08:00 AM to Bang Na, Bangkok where I switched into the BTS to go up to Mo Chit. On this day I was super excited for the trip and also to try out my new Tamron lens (24-70mm 2.8).

Maeklong, Railway Market

As soon as I got out of the Bus I already started feeling the strong Sun which the forecast predicted earlier in the Radio. God, It was Hot!!!!!!!!!!!!.. But of course that didn't hold me back from walking around the whole day and enjoying the markets. Even I changed my T-Shirt 2 times, Ha! Just make sure to cool down yourself every once in a while and Hydrate yourself with as much water you can!

The Railway market started about 5 mins away where the bus dropped us off. There are plenty of different regional fruits, vegetables and also fish & meat to buy.

The train is passing the market 5 times a day. That's the most exciting moment when the train horns 3 minutes before it arrives. Well, at least for the tourists :D .. For the market owners its just a normal day.

Train Arrival times8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m.
Train Departure times6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

Just make sure to be on the railways about 10 - 15 mins before the train arrives as it gets pretty crowded and people getting very excited to get the best spot to take a photo.

Shortly after you hear the horn of the train , market owners are getting ready to pack and move their stuff away from the railway

As you can see here it's all really narrow and there isn't a lot of space to move

After spending around 2.5 hours at the railway market , I decided to go to the floating market which is just near by (around 10 minutes by local share car - 10 Bath)

Maeklong, Floating Market

The floating market is basically a market on the river where you can buy food and drinks from and on the boats. There are also nice walking ways around the river where you can find a lot of restaurants and shops. My first stop was a nice place to drink an iced tea to cool down my body a bit as it still was crazy hot outside ^o^ !

I would have loved to stay at the floating market also by night but unfortunately the last bus to Bangkok goes back at 7:00 PM so I just went to one of the nice looking restaurants around this area at about 6 PM to eat some dinner. I had some scallops and a big fish which was fantastic. Some locals even say that you can find the best seafood of Thailand in this area.

I will definitely come back to stay there over night to take some photos in the morning and at night. I really enjoyed this area while walking around and also having great food :)

Thank you for reading !

Thanks Buddy! :))

I also enjoy visiting markets during my travels. That railway market must be amazing to see. I've never seen something like that before. What an organisation! You hear the horn, pack your stuff and leave. Great!

I've heard already about the floating market. I can imagine it is also very impressive. One thing that I like about visiting the markets is that you get to know the culture and people of the country. There is no better way to get to know the country than through its people. And markets are usually very busy and people are very chatty :) From time to time you don't understand a word but that is what I like. And we still have arms and legs to communicate :)

Thank you for sharing!

I only can agree 100% with what you sayed ! Thank you for your nice comment!

wow, wonderful market photographs in railway line and river. love your great work. love your style friend worldcapture

Thank you very much dear @ykdesign :)) Hope you have a great Weekend :))

Wow! it's very good place @worldcapture.

Yeah it definitely is ! Cheers!

You did it again @worldcapture! Beautiful photos, just like the ones you took at the Bangkok Chinatown! You capture people moments very elegantly :) I have heard of the floating market but not the railway market. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing with us how to get there too. Amazing work :)

Thank you @marblely :)) Appreciate your comment! Hope you have a great day!

:) Thank you! Happy Sunday to you! :)

Like yourself I saw the documentary about that weird railway market, where all the stalls are so close to train that sometimes you can't believe that they will not crash. But the funniest thing how quickly the people mobilizing their overhang for sun protection that spanned from both sides and people just walk on the rails.

The flouting market is another amazing thing, very practical for those who work on them. The food on your pictures looks very delicious, I bet it is really tasty. You have done so beautiful pictures, thank you for this trip to Thailand!

Hey @stef1 :)) I appreciate your kind comment! Thank you ! Yeah the food was indeed incredible good ! Fresh and healthy, ha! Hope you have a great day!

Hope you enjoy trip in Thailand 🇹🇭😊

I see :)) Hope you have a great day!

I like both the markets you visited they are something I have never seen before. A market by a railway? That's amazing and just when I though I have seen it all, I see a floating market. That's just incredible.

It was interesting to seethe life goes on in those markets, I also love your photos, they are beautiful!

Hey @audreybits :)) Crazy markets, right? Totally enjoyed visiting them :)) Thank you!

Oh yeah, crazy! I bet you did, do you plan on visiting there again?

Wow bizarre how close the train passes the market or close actually touches it I assume.
Can imagine you would love to get here back by nightfall, think some blue hour would make great pictures here. Thanks for sharing all these wonderful things in Asia, willing to go there more and more.

Hey Buddy! Thanks for you comment! Yeah it is close, super close, ha! I definitely need to go back to capture some photos with the morning/evening and night light! Cheers and a great weekend ! @guchtere

Its a lot more crowed than I expected. Does locals go there as well as tourists because there's a lot of fresh produce.

Well yeah, there are some locals just buying food for them. But to be honest, it's dominated by chinese tour tourists and also some western people. I't really matters at what time you go there. .:)) @livinguktaiwan
