Travel Tip: Sedlec Ossuary, one of the scariest places in the Czech Republic

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will certainly please all horror fans since I will take you to one of the creepiest places of the country, the legendary Sedlec Ossuary.

A part of the former Sedlec Abbey in Sedlec, a suburb of the beautiful historic town of Kutna Hora, the Sedlec Ossuary is a small chapel found beneath the local cemetery. The chapel itself is quite small but still big enough to contain skeletons of up to 70,000 people! The bones are arranged to create decoration of the ossuary, making it one of the spookiest but at the same most visited tourist attractions of the country.

With its origin dating back to as early as the 13th century, the Sedlec Cemetery used to be a very popular place to be buried at because an abbot allegedly brought a jar of "Holy Soil" from Israel to the site in early medieval times.

Because of its unique spooky appearance and atmosphere, the Sedlec Ossuary has been featured in many movies and it even appeared in the iconic American franchise "Ripley´s Believe It or Not!"

Oh my god,I got goosebumps..it’s definitely scary but at the same time it’s really unique and attractive for the tourists..i was wondering is this place is haunted or not?😟

Not that I know of but I would not be surprised... There is probably loads going on people even don´t know about, like behinds the scenes kind of thing:).....

Sedlec Ossuary is such a scary place to visit.70,000 skeleton it's huge. even 1 skeleton is enough for me to afraid. Seeing skeleton in a movie is pretty different for viewing it live. May be i don't have courage to see them. Amazed to know that a lot of tourist get attracted toward this scariest place. May be people love adventure or they will get lesson after seeing the bones. Thanks for sharing @czechglobalhosts

I hate watching horror movies but seeing all those skeletons in person did not evoke any unpleasant emotions in me... But then we are all different.

Well said we are all different. May be you are brave hearted guy @czechglobalhosts

This reminds me of the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh. There they have also stacked all the skulls of the people murdered in the 80s.

Super creepy, but cool :)

It's exceptional.... thanks for letting us know!

WOW that must have been such an amazing experience to visit there

@czechglobalhosts One of the best things about visiting Sedlec, Czech Republic is the magnificent Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the ‘Church of Bones’. Built in the 1400s, the Gothic style church looks like a normal old age church from the outside, but its lower floors have the most beautiful artistic arrangement of skeletons known to the human kind. An ossuary is a place where the bones or the skeletal remains of the dead people are placed. In the ancient times when the burial space was scarce, the remains were kept in small Ossuary like the Sedlec one.

This church is allegory of religion? Like religion is built on bones of their parishioners.... Never seen such, ummm, exotic buildings... very interesting, thank you

This is a lovely post.....

Ha ha this is not a lovely place. Do you're like to romance with your lovely in cemetery place? Lol... Little funny. This is a most historic location. Please must read before comment.

Yep, making comments like this is pretty pointless and a waste of time for everyone, including yourself....

Okay,am just a new steemian....so help me in any way

this is an adrenalin-ridden tourist spot to visit, a mysterious historical place that attracts the attention of many. have a good day tomas :)

That's grateful to see fabulous location you given via travel tip @czechglobalhosts. I have some doubts friend. It's how's recover skull and body parts of past structures? I guess some chemical mixed to bodies. However your introducing location so perfect to visit any travelers. Lot of crowd space there. Thanks to you.
