Tree Tuesday - Just Me and the Dryads at Fort Ord National Monument - Salinas, California

in #treetuesday7 years ago (edited)

“Oh, Trees, Trees, Trees...wake. Don’t you remember it? Don’t you remember me? Dryads and Hamadryads, come to me.”

- C.S. Lewis

FO - Dryad 3.jpg
Dryads have come up a couple times in the comments on my posts over the last week. I was not familiar with the term so, fellow Steemian, @yidneth provided me with a little background information on these mythical tree spirits.

I did a little more research and discovered that the Greek root, drys, means oak so, originally, the word dryad referred specifically to nymphs occupying oak trees. Later on, the term was used in a broader sense. These spirits took the form of a beautiful, shy young women who were thought to live only as long as the tree they called home.

Dryads can be found throughout literature in the works of Milton, Coleridge, Keats and, of course, J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis.

I encountered all of these oak trees hiking at Fort Ord National Monument and they made me think of @yidneth. I secretly wished that I had been as prepared as she is at any given moment, having a beautiful, flowing dress in the trunk of my car so I could take on the persona of a nymph in this idyllic setting. (That is quite out of character for me, by the way.)😊

You should check out her blog where you will find the post
of her in a frozen forest...absolutely stunning!

I enjoyed my journey through the trees as well as learning a little Greek mythology along the way. Thanks for coming along!

This is my contribution to #treetuesday as it has been proclaimed to be by @old-guy-photos. It is also my submission for the #landscapephotography contest sponsored by @photocontests and initiated by @juliank.

What a good pictures, what a history are they telling. Perfect shot from nature

Thank you so much! I often wonder about the things these trees can tell us. Perhaps I need to listen harder. :)

Some amazing looking trees. They are such an amazing piece of life. For sure they have an intelligence of sorts but the human mind would struggle to quantify it. How could they not having lived so long:)

There are so many sprawling specimens in these hills. I think I have enough photos that I could publish a book on just the trees from this place...seems like the audience might be slightly limited. ;)

There are a few specific trees that I have established relationships with and always say a few words as I pass by. I consider them to be wise confidants. Perhaps I really am a wood nymph and am just now realizing that. :D

Trees really can be of great support. There was a plum tree when I was a little girl that provided me with a haven:)

The tree in the last picture looks so cool, it looks like it may be the only tree I could climb if I wanted to 😂

It is a cool one! These oak trees really lend themselves to climbing and it's as if they are bending down to encourage you.

Thanks for checking out my post and leaving a comment!

Beautiful post! The b&w looks like an octopus. Photos, as well as trees, are amazing!

I hadn't seen the octopus but now I do. Thanks for opening my eyes and my mind! :)

Thanks also for your kind words. Good to see you back here again!

My pleasure! I'm also glad to see you here.

Aww I'm so honoured! Thanks for the mention. By the way I love both Tolkien and Lewis :). Those are lovely trees (or dryads). You're so sweet :)

My pleasure! I thought you might like these beauties.

I have a picture in a tree similar to the third :) I must look for it, if I do I will tag you back :) You are really as sweet as talented :) Today I focused more on illustration, I added a song but focused more on the paintings I made for it, somehow I have been neglecting that part of my persona since I joined, :) and I have a few dryad drawings :) hmm you just encouraged me to make a little compilation :)

You are so vibrant and full of life. I am so glad we found each other...more so every time I read one of your posts or an encouraging comment from you.

Woowww that last tree is so awesome! I would so hug it :)

It is awesome and so much to hug! Thanks for the comment!

Beautiful. The first tree reminds me of an old sycamore that we have on our farm... although I know it's not a sycamore. The shape of those old trees really hold some untold stories.

There is another part of the trail that has sycamore trees that remind me of jumbo versions of these oak trees. I agree with you about the untold stories...they have seen and experienced much!

Oh wow! Those are some great ones!! Really reminds me of an Angry Orchard hard cider package lol. Have you ever seen that? Very cool shots!

Thank you, sir! I do now know about Angry Orchard, thanks to you!

They are yummy by the way. Totally like fruit juice, but with a hidden zap lol.

All this girl needs is a hidden zap! :D
