This morning, nine days after I interviewed John Goehrke, the view count is exploding.
For real. Click the link above and check out the number. As I type this right now, the view count is at 7,402. Who knows where it will get to, but at one point this morning, it was increasing by one view every two seconds.
Last week, I went into detail about the power of "overnight influencers," and how Steemit writers can leverage these topics. "Trending" stories on Facebook and Twitter make up a huge part of the content we consume on a daily basis. The problem is, for the most part, many news outlets write the exact same, or similar stories. For example, when Genie agreed to go on the date, many pieces of content that told the story were the same thing: A collection of screenshots of the Twitter conversation between Genie and John.
The reason my Steemit story stood out was that I offered something that the other websites didn't: An exclusive "20 questions" interview with John. People were Googling John's name and wanted to find out more about him. And when they did, they would have seen my Steemit blog post sitting on the first page of Google results.
This morning's view count explosion.
When I went to bed last night, the view count on my interview with John was at about 3,000 views. Now it's at 7,720. (Notice the increase from above?)
Why? Because the date happened last night!
And this morning, this story is trending. Especially because Genie admitted John was actually "normal" and the date was "great."
People are dying to find out more about this guy who: 1) Landed a date with one of the most attractive female tennis players in the world. 2) Got to sit court-side with her at last night's Bucks/Nets game. 3) Was smooth enough to actually make it appear as though Eugenie had a good time.
More about the date...
Genie getting ready
That coat, tho
For a completely random guy with no Twitter profile picture, John looks pretty normal!
Seems like a success!
Oh, by the way, Genie just happened to also be in the Sports Illustrated 2017 Swimsuit Issue that also came out yesterday...
Final thoughts:
- The interview with John view count is now at 8,357
- I've reached out to John for "20 MORE questions," however, it's probably a long shot that he'll participate
- There are definitely opportunities for Steemit authors to capitalize on topics that are trending, as long as what they're writing isn't the exact same as what everyone else is writing.
And suddenly it seems as though view counts have been removed...
Any idea if this is a glitch?
Looks like it's fixed
was just about to say... strange timing? or have you broken the the website? :P
I just noticed that, and came over here to ask about it... most strange, and odd timing.
One thing worth mentioning that I had forgotten about, which was pointed out to me by my friend @chrisj, is that everyone who is not a Steemit user who lands on Steemit content sees this message at the bottom of the post...
This is a clever call-to-action that the Steemit team has had in place since the beginning.
It's hardly enough, though. There needs to be an actual marketing campaign. Some advertisement, maybe? I know that seems a bit far fetched...
I think that most issues surrounding steemit could be resolved through a more transparent money system and greater resolve.
I liked steem power V1. And now it looks like the whole thing is getting tossed out the window.
Please excuse us while we bicker about the rewards distribution.
You are the hero Steem needs, but doesn't deserve @wadepaterson
Haha, I don't know about that.
I simply wanted to share my observations as I've kept an eye on this view count, and how it has increased as this story gets more play on social media. I don't know how many of these 8,000+ views will turn into conversions; however, the more times we can bring someone to Steemit due to good content, the more we will familiarize them with the platform and make future conversions easier.
Make it 10,000!
it's at 11681
woah that's crazy! I really think this must be legit outside viewers considering the steemit post was linked so high up when googling his name.
I kinda feel bad for the other participants of the 20 question series. Randomly opened up stellabelle's one and it had 14 views in comparison.
The good news is, anyone can go back and check out the old blog posts! They're all there (and I include the 20 questions list of previous interviews in every new 20 questions post I do).
That is true! Stored securely! :)
I think it will take some time til a post is going to surpass that one! Mentioned your post in an attempt at a funny mspaint pic I uploaded earlier :P
edit: looking back at my post now I can see some similarities of the text there and on your original post, was not meant to make fun of your post in any way or on purpose repeat any wording that you used :P
Great PR, excellent photos and design of article while being a really solid motivator. Thank you so very much for your work and pointers to the community.
All for one and one for all! Namaste :)
Thanks for reading!
Thanks for posting the follow-up! And this all also points to the importance (for Steemit) of people being able to bring in "outside eyeballs" to read articles here.
I wasn't aware of the little message at the bottom... but that's also very cool. I especially like that it is UNDERSTATED... big flashing lights screaming "MAKE MONEY BLOGGING ON STEEMIT!!!" will attract the totally wrong sort of user ("money seekers" rather than "content creators"). Anyway, good job!
I agree with your thoughts on this. I think it is a strong call-to-action that isn't too in-your-face.
Great job helping bring people to Steemit!

That is the highest view count I have seen!
Thanks dude! I'm curious if there's any way of finding out what the highest viewed Steemit story of all time is? Not that this is necessarily it, but with the way it's increasing, perhaps it's in the top 5?
I've heard a story that at early days some "funny baby video" with 10 upvotes and 0.03$ payout have got 15.000 views from outside but that could be just a myth )
Interesting! I'll do some searching and see if I can find it. That's a shame that the reward was so low if it brought in 15,000 legitimate views.
There was no view counter before quite recently, so it sounds like a myth.
Ping @sneak
Can you get the two of them onto Steemit? That would bring people in
Incredibly highly doubtful. I reached out to Genie a few months ago for a 20 questions interview request and never heard back. I don't know either of them personally, I simply requested to interview John last week and he was kind enough to accept!
It's always worth a try. I mention it to anyone vaguely famous I have contact with. Just needs a few of them to get the word out
Thx . The fact that ur post are not being upvoted is a shame. This is so valuable for steem.
Great job on the follow-up!
John hit twitter lotto and won the jackpot :D This is one of those stories you really don't hear often about and I'm not surprised one bit at the attention it is getting!
Thanks! He sure did... dude is a legend. (Thanks for the Re-Steem)
10k + thats sick!
I've been hitting refresh all morning, haha.
Well that explains the views.... :-P
Haha, clever comment!
Actually, I tested this the other day, and refreshing the page on an old story doesn't increase the view count. Try it out with one of your older posts... I just double checked this on one of my old interviews and confirmed that the number doesn't go up when a person refreshes on the same content they've already seen.
You are indeed correct it seems.
Haha lol
Amazing job Wade! Thanks for all you do man!
It's fantastic :)
Thanks, Adil!
nicely done. :-)
Thanks!
Awesome job @wadepaterson - it's great to see your original article, which was really entertaining, third on google results for his name. Up to 11,000+ views on a post is a great milestone for us. Maybe we can beat those views with your follow up article on his date :)
John is going to be getting a lot of media requests over the next couple of days, but I'll periodically check in with him to see if he'll do a follow-up!
Thanks for your comment :)
Good job ! Upped some of you comments.
Wow, really appreciate that, @transisto - thanks for your support.
Good coverage of this success story. Thanks Wade.
At least i think it can be called a success story for the guy. Now I don't know how many new steemit users this will attract, but even a few percents of theview content would be not small :)
Again, thank you!
Instant conversion numbers will probably be quite low, but I'm in it for the long-game. The more time someone comes across Steemit because good content pulled them in, the more they will wonder what this platform is all about, and even consider joining.
I fully agree!
Excellent pictures, you two please enjoy yourself
You have done a great work @wadeparterson!
I appreciate that!
The Power of Social Media, great work.
Thanks!
But what happened??? Is there going to be a second date? Is it true love??? (Upvoted & followed)
Haha thanks for the follow! Time will tell, I suppose, whether or not there will be a second date.
