Agreed. That semi-conservative approach is good; So many coins will fail due to poor community/ development/ adoption/ technology.

Yes, I think that's the better way to go. It's probably safer to stick to the top 25 cryptocurrencies that have good community support/development. However, some of the newer projects are worth looking at and monitoring to see if there are any good opportunities that will develop.
