there is higher fees and longer waiting time is because of higher number of transactions. Blocks are not too big at all, and in fact the capacity of transactions per block is kept from increasing (which bigger blocks would allow, but Core developers don't want to allow this, which is why we have scaling issue in the first place). As there are more people transacting, and capacity is fixed, it creates a BACKLOG, which is why fees go higher (if you chose to do so, this is not forced onto anyone) and if you don't want to pay higher fee, then you will need to wait in queue, which is why there is longer waiting times. That being said, don't worry about the hype.
