Yes, that was the speed reached by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin aboard the Vostok 1 space vehicle in 1961.
The cosmonaut managed to complete a complete orbit around the Earth and, during the mission, Gagarin flew for 108 minutes at a speed of 27,400 km/h. At the highest point of the flight, it reached an altitude of 327 km.
In comparison to an airplane, the owner of the in-flight speed record is The North American X-15 developed in the 1950s that made its first flight in 1959, but it was in October 1967 that it reached its maximum speed, reaching 7,272 km/h. The mark is equivalent to 6.7 times the speed of sound.
