I lived in a small town secluded from the urban area. There was a small elementary school, and the senior school joined with less than four hundred students. Due to our small population, everyone knew everyone, so it was easy to catch a criminal in our town. No one dared to commit crimes due to the familiar faces, but we didn't need to worry about it given we're believers in integrity. Most of the children my age, I was 15 by the way, had known each other through school, so there was no kid my age I didn't know. I was pretty close with all of them, and we saw each other as more of a family than acquaintances.
One afternoon, it was about 5:00 PM when I saw it. There was a girl around my age dressed in a peculiar outfit and a face I'd never seen before strolling down our street. Her hair was a sandy blonde that reached just past her shoulders, her skin was abnormally pale, and she had an expression of elation. The thing that stood out to me the most was her unusual-sized head compared to her body, very disproportionate. I took a peep at her from my bedroom window before closing the curtains. The town we lived in was close to foreigners and visitors, so most people would avoid moving in. That evening, I saw my mother quivering as she drank more alcohol from her cup.
"Mom... are you okay?" I asked quite frantically.
"It's... it's happening again!!" she stuttered while closing all the curtains in our home.
"What... what's happening?" I asked again. This time, my sister sat at the dining table next to me.
"The girl Laurilie!!" she shrieked while covering her mouth. "I can't believe it... she's returned to haunt our kids, Daniel!"
Our father came down the stairs and wrapped an arm around my mother. Her eyes were darting back and forth, and she was breathing heavily. My sister and I exchanged baffled glances before looking at her again. It took her some time to calm down, but we knew our father was also quite perturbed but tried to conceal his fear. He sternly looked into our eyes, to a point where we began to feel uneasy. Our mother finally stopped quivering and sobbing, rebuilding her composure, and spoke up.
"Kids, there will be... a girl your age visiting our town," she said, still somewhat trembling, "you will notice her due to her unusual appearance. Remember, no matter what you say, don't mention anything about her appearance!!"
"Who the fuck is this?" Keira said while getting frustrated.
"Keira, don't ever give such an attitude. Listen to me girls, this is something serious that would get you into danger if you don't listen to us!!" our father said again. "Do as your mother says, never mention her appearance!!"
"Dad... we don't even know who you're referring to.... wait, I think I know," I remembered the odd-looking girl that strolled past our home before.
The next three weeks went by successfully, so everyone forgot about the girl the adults warned us about. Until one afternoon, the most horrific incident changed my memory forever. Keira and I were riding our bicycles to meet up with some friends on the oval for netball on a Saturday afternoon. After twenty minutes on the turf, we saw it, the same odd-looking girl I saw the other day. She was standing at some distance with an unsettling smile on her face. She didn't wave nor gesticulate to participate but just stood there with her round, large eyes looking at us.
My sister and I remained sedated, but some of the other girls began sniggering. One of them even pointed at her and whispered to another, so I gesticulated at them to stop. Another girl approached her and looked at her stupidly before blasting off laughing in her face. I knew they were being egregiously nasty towards her due to her disproportionate head, so I felt a bit sorry for her.
However, the next event that happened would change my life forever. The girl's arm reached out and grabbed the girl closest to her that was still laughing and lifted her from the ground. She was gagging before she was strangled to death. We all began running as the girl with the disproportionate head turned into something my memory won't let go of. Her human body turned into that of a serpent and came after us. We all got on our bikes and rode off. Since that day, we never went on the oval again.
