For those of you who are wondering how Trump could be so insensitive as to hold his first rally in Tulsa (site of the 1921 massacre and destruction of Black Wall Street) on Juneteenth or how it could possibly help him win the election – it’s actually most likely being done on purpose to please his base.
If you read the comments on the Breitbart article on the rally (which doesn’t mention the significance of the place/date), you’ll see a lot of comments like:
"I love that Trump doesn't care what will piss off the libtard snowflakes. He's just there to connect with the people, and won’t let anything stand in his way." (an amalgamation of a number of comments)
There was a much smaller number of comments of the flavor of:
"He'll probably use this chance to talk about racial inclusion. Trump is more popular with Black voters than any other Republican. He welcomes everyone. Uniting America and Making it Great." (also an amalgamation)
I will also say that a large portion of the comments appear to be bot/troll farmed, so it’s unclear how many real people this represents, but it does at least give a picture of what they want the public opinion of his supporters to look like.
To win in November, he needs as many of his base as possible to be excited to vote for him.
As a side effect, actions like this distract the rest of us from pushing on the systemic reforms that we want to see happen.
He’s a master at this.
