The speculation of President Trump not ruling out recognition of the annexation of Crimea has sent shock waves across Europe and has firmly positioned him as a untrustworthy partner. Would this encourage further Russian 'annexations' or the US President believes he can tie up Putin to yet another 'guarantee' as the Budapest Memorandum of 1994.
He is supposed to be Repubican, conservative, possibly even a hawk, yet these days all of the US allies question the key premise - that the US will come to their rescue in the event of a Putin assault, making good on article 5 of the NATO treaty. Would you trust him if European?.
After leaks that President Trump has tried to convince French President Macron to pull out of NATO it is crystal clear - the EU should go it alone and speed up the build up of its defense lines without need to resort to Trump's defense guarantees.
