Should nothing changes by midnight then our federal government will be in a shutdown. For a brief moment earlier this week it looked like a bipartisan solution on immigration was possible, one that would grant a path to citizenship for DREAMers and funding for border security.
However, in the tradition of being the last to speak to our dear leader, Trump shut the DACA deal down after speaking to hardline immigration officials, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and his advisor Stephen Miller. After the deal seemed dead, Chief of Staff John Kelly went on Fox News to reveal that Trump's understanding of immigration reform had "evolved." Kelly said the president now understood that a wall across the entirety of the southern border was unnecessary since there are natural defenses like rivers and mountains across the terrain.
This abrupt change shocked conservatives and Trump's base, but most importantly it enraged Trump. The morning after Kelly's interview, Trump took to Twitter and let his base know that he had not changed his mind on the wall and that he'd build that monstrosity all across the southern border.
Things are looking especially dark for Trump's White House with a shutdown less than 12 hours away. Of course, this is no bother to Trump who heads to Mar-a-Lago this afternoon where he will attend a gala celebrating the one year anniversary of his presidency.
