Tucker: A Man and His Dream
Tucker: A Man and His Dream is a film about a man named Tucker. Thomas Tucker is an inventor and visionary who had a love for cars since a young age. Thomas Tucker went to Detroit to start a family and pursue his dream of manufacturing and designing the finest car the world has seen. For this post, we're going to find what aspects of Tucker: A Man and His Dream an entrepreneurial film and what interactions are present between entrepreneurship and society from the perspective of the film.
At the beginning of the film, Thomas begins his journey at the Indianapolis speedway with an automotive genius Harry Miller. In 1936 he created a combat car for the war happening during that time. He made the combat car bulletproof and it had a work air conditioning system but the Army turned him down because the vehicle was too fast. This is an example of an interaction society can have with an entrepreneur. Thomas wanted to meet a want or need that the Army had but it fell short because they didn't want a vehicle that fast for combat. Further, into the film, Thomas is at his home in Michigan when a man named Alex Tremulis approaches him. Alex is a man from the Air Force who studied automotive engineering and wants to work with Thomas. Alex brought Thomas a sketch of an improved model of a vehicle Thomas made. Alex had ideas to make it more aerodynamic like a plane. Thomas then accepts Alex and his idea of working with him. This is an aspect that makes this an entrepreneurial film because Thomas recruits Alex to work toward his dream of making the best car the world has seen. I find this interesting because Entrepreneurs will want to recruit and network with others that will help them towards their overall goal. Also in the film Tucker when looking for dealerships to buy his car he runs into a competing manufacturer. This competitor threatens Tucker to stay out of the car business. I find this interesting because when you have a product of any kind you will most likely have competitors that will have the same target market. This aspect of the film shows future entrepreneurs that you will have to compete for the target market. To win over the target market you need to have a product that improves on the competition's product or a product that gets rid of the competition's product.
Tucker: A Man and His Dream is definitely an entrepreneurial film. It gives good insight into the entrepreneurial aspects like the need for other people's talents like when Thomas recruited Alex to the design department. Also, It shows the trial and error process all entrepreneurs will take. For instance when He had the idea for the combat car but the army declined due to the vehicle being too fast. This film has more entrepreneurial aspects than some of the films we watched and I find that interesting all around.
