The main body of the proposal describes the solution of the project. It provides the information that enables key decision makers to decide whether the project should be undertaken at all.

The main body of the formal proposal is the crux of your business case proposal.

The main body of a business case proposal may include the

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

The needs assessment contains the situational assessment or the problem statement. This should clearly establish the situation that currently exists that will be exploited or solved by the project. It should contain a description of the relevant environmental conditions, an assessment of how the business needs are currently being met, or not met, or an analysis of the gap between the current situation and the stated objectives.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

The technical analysis provides a more detailed technical analysis of the implications of the situational assessment and problem statement.

PROJECT WORK PLAN

This covers the implementation strategy, which is the plan that covers how the solution to the problem or opportunity will be put into action.

FINANCIAL PLAN

This gives the details of the Benefit/Cost/Risk Analysis.

PROJECT TEAM

This contains a list of the people who will be responsible for implementing the project, and contains relevant information about the team members.

APPENDIX

This section of the business case contains all references, case studies, and testimonials that are referred to in the main body of the business case.

Each element in the main body should have a section introduction.

You should format this paragraph appropriately to highlight it. Consider the use of a larger font size, bolding, shading, and so on.

This focuses the reader's attention and helps the reader to make the transition from one major concept to the next, and gives you an opportunity to state your key themes.

When writing the elements in the main body of the business case, you should

  • stay focused on the controlling strategy you established in the executive summary
  • be objective
  • use specific, concrete language
  • support your claims with substantive evidence
