Have you ever attended tutorial classes? And what do you think about this? In recent years, many students attend tutorial class after school or at weekends as they want to get better results. However, can tutorial classes really help students improve their result? Or will it only increase the pressure to students? I would like to talk about it here.
Professor Bray in Hong Kong University conducted a research last year, named “Private Supplementary Tutoring: Comparative Perspectives on Patterns and Implications”. It showed that nearly 50% of primary and lower secondary students receive tutoring while at upper secondary the proportion students receive tutoring are about 70%. And According to my survey, most of them agreed that their result have been improved after they attended tutorial classes. It seems that tutorial classes are efficient. However, is attending tutorial classes the key of their success? Tutorial classes may help students do revision, but I think hardworking is the most important factor to improve result. In my project, most students who attends tutorial classes said that they wanted to improve their result. Therefore, their result improved because they had clear goal which is to improve their result and start working hard. Some students thought that their result must be improved after attend tutorial classes, but it was wrong. More lessons didn’t mean more efficient in study.
We also need to work hard and pay attention in class. Tutorial classes are only a tool, but whether your result will improve is based on your determination.
Also, attending tutorial classes will increase the pressure to students. According to my survey, only a few respondents enjoyed tutorial classes, and most of them said that they spent very little time on other curriculum activities. There has been lots of work to do in school already, so how can they have the time attend tutorial classes? More work may not be key of successes. It may reduce their sleeping and rest time, so they cannot concentrate on the next day and the effectiveness of study will also be lowered.
Many students didn’t attend tutorial classes, they still can get good result. These students always concentrate well in classes and have a revision plan. They pay attention in lessons so their revisions are more effective. Therefore, the concentration in classes is important. However, some students think that they don’t need to listen to teachers in lesson because they can go to tutorial classes after school. But it only changes the learning process from school to tutorial classes, and they will waste the time in the school lesson. Then they will get tired after tutorial classes and have less time to do revision. And on the next day, they will be tired and have low concentration in classes again, it will become a vicious cycle so how can students get satisfactory result by attending tutorial classes?
In conclusion, tutorial classes are not the main reason of getting good result.Getting good result requires hard work and high concentration in classes. However, tutorial classes may reduce the concentration of students on the next day. Actually school lessons are enough, we don’t really need the tutorial classes.
