X-Files: S11 EP05: Ghouli

SPOILERS

Last week we saw our favorite FBI team head to Norfolk, VA to investigate the case of two teenage girls, who slash each other nearly to death on an abandoned ship, the Chimera. Why? Because they wanted to prove that an internet monster, named Ghouli, is real. * ahem * Slenderman * ahem * The thing is, the girls actually see the other as Ghouli. An anonymous man calls in the grisly scene.

Scully examining the scene.

On top of this strange case, Scully has her own problems. She has been experiencing hypnagogia, a state between being awake and asleep, causing vivid hallucinations. In this state, Scully is in a strange house, with a dark figure, who she chases throughout the house. The funny thing about this house is, she can’t leave. She’ll chase the figure out a door leading outside, only to end up back in the house.

Getting back to the case, Scully and Mulder find out that both girls have the same boyfriend, Jackson. When they go to question Jackson, they get more than they bargain for. As the approach the house, they hear three gun shots. When they break down the door the bodies of Jackson’s parents lay in the kitchen and the body of Jackson is found in his room. The local police brush it off as a murder-suicide. But, our Mulder and Scully know better, and Scully can’t shake the feeling that she has been in that house before.

Scully makes the conclusion that Jackson, could indeed be William. That he sent her the visions to bring her to him. To help him. Scully starts to absorbed every inch of Jackson’s room. His snow globe collection, the Malcom X quote above his bed, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” We then see Scully in the morgue giving a tearful apology to the body of who she thinks, is William. Letting him know she never forgot him and gave him up to keep him safe.

Scully suffers from another state of hypnagogia. She is back in Jackson’s house, but fixated on a snow globe containing a windmill. When she awakes from this state, she is being questioned by a hospital doctor, asking where the body is. Jackson’s body is missing. The DNA results are back and Mulder reveals that Jackson, is in fact, William. The trio examine the morgue, trying to find William’s body, there is no way anyone could have taken the body out of the room, unless they slid it through the morgue’s tiny bathroom window. While on the search, Scully bumps into a man, telling her, “Don’t give up on the bigger picture.”

When the team return to William’s house they find a secret laptop revealing he is behind Ghouli’s web page and a DoD file, “Project Crossroads.” A government project of human and alien DNA hybrids. A pair of shady government agents storm in telling Mulder and Scully that this case is no longer theirs. This causes Mulder to be a tad clumsy.

This clash with another agency ruffles Skinner’s feathers, prompting a shady meeting on the Chimera. Where he tells Mulder to…

C’mon, Walter. Do you even know these guys? We/they don’t trust you anymore anyway.

Back at William’s house, Mulder, using blood spatter, was able to deduct that William did not kill his adoptive parents. Someone else did, they moved the bodes to make it look like William did it! Since William and Scully share visions, it only makes sense that William can project things in people’s minds. Ya’know, alien-human crossbreed and all. He, William, made Mulder and Scully hear the gun shot!

< center> Meanwhile, William is still at the hospital and visiting his girlfriends. Apologizing for his Ghouli prank. Telling them about his super human powers of projection. Well, one of the girls sees him with the other, and out of jealousy informs the authorities of his whereabouts. With agents closing in, William uses his powers to elude capture, turning agents on each other.

William slips away and Mulder and Scully are left at a loss. Headed back to the Washington, they stop for gas at a station with a windmill. Mulder runs into the station, while Scully waits in the car. A familiar man pulls up to the pump next to her. The man from the hospital. They share a cryptic dialog, the man saying, he wishes to have had the chance to know her. He leaves and Mulder returns. Then it hits Scully. She and Mulder check the CC TV at the station, and to their amazement, the man is William!

IMHO…

This episode is by far the best episode of this season. We are getting back to the X-Files we love. I enjoyed the writers pulling their inspiration for this episode from the real life internet boogie man. While I did feel that Scully was overemotional, for Scully, I did feel that it was necessary, Scully is a mother and she thought her child was dead. I hope to see more episodes like this for the rest of season 11. We are halfway through; we have no room for shenanigans. Will they be able to stop the plot to wipe the plant of human life? Hopefully, we get closer to the truth in EP6, Kitty.
