Have you ever imagined what mushrooms are? Think about it.
Many people think mushrooms are plants, others think they are vegetables. Which is not the case.

The main characteristic of a plant is that they contain chlorophyll (which is the green colouring matter on the leaves).
Chlorophyll is used by planted to convert sunlight energy into carbohydrates.
However, mushrooms don’t contain chlorophyll which means they don’t undergo photosynthesize. They just “steal” the carbohydrates they need from plants.
Mushrooms grow on decaying matter such as deadwood, fallen leaves and plant roots they extract the carbon dioxide and minerals from it this type of mushrooms is called saprophytes their examples include white buttons, crimini and shiitake and oyster mushrooms.

They are over 140.00 species of mushrooms in the world but in this whole book we are going to focus more on oyster and white button (agaricus Bisporus) mushrooms than any other types the reason is quite simple their the most widely cultivated, harvested and distributed worldwide.
They also have a wide demand and unending market.
Remember our target is to grow mushrooms and make super profits it’s not knowing all the mushroom species, that why am going to specialise more on the 2 common species.

About Oyster mushrooms (pleurotus Ostreatus).
Hearing the name Oyster sounds more of something one can find in Ocean than on land, the name pleurotus ostreatus is a Latin name which means “sideways oyster”. Oyster is simply the shape and colour rather than the taste of the mushrooms.
Oyster are one of the most versatile mushrooms, they are very easy to cultivate, common all over the world and also very beautiful coming in a broad spectrum of colours.
