Ulog 4 | Losing Never Feels Good (Lessons In Humility)

Today was chess day. I've been playing with a friend for a while and I've always come out on top. I guess I kind of got relaxed with the entire setup. After all, I was the better player. Well, today I was in for a rude awakening.

Started From The Top

My friend came around and asked for a game of chess. At the time, I was rather feeling sleepy but I didn't want to pass up the opportunity of showing my game superiority. I opened my eyes and began the first game. Like clockwork, I took possession of the board and before he knew it I had won the game.

Well, this friend of mine wasn't going to give up easily. He asked for another game and I obliged him. As usual, the game was fairly a piece of cake. I was winning and happy about it. Deep inside of me, I felt like I deserved it.

The Tide Turns

The third game started on a rather aggressive note. I lost two pawns before I could say Jack Robinson. That temporarily destabilized me. I was trying to get a grip on the game when he offered a queen exchange. I turned down the offer over and over until it was impossible to do so. Long story short, he won that round due to my carelessness.

I was furious. I asked for another game. This time, I was out for blood. I attacked him from all sides, throwing in everything I had into the game. It was either going to be a winner or draw. I was mistaken. In my insane drive to win, I left my king exposed and I got checked.

Sometimes, You Should Learn To Stay Down

I couldn't believe my eyes. I started making explanations and all, trying to soften the blow of the shock. As far as I was concerned, he didn't win the game based on his skill, he was just lucky. Well, to prevent me wrong, my friend offered that I undo my last move and continue the game. I took the offer.

I wish I could say I won the game. Unfortunately, I can't. It was a brutal loss. Thinking about it, it never feels good to lose.

I guess my case is a class example of "Pride Goes Before A Fall". It pays to be humble
